GENETIC AND GENOMIC TESTING PROGRAM
For people who are already diagnosed with cancer, genetic and genomic testing may help you and your doctor to make decisions about your treatment plan and to understand your risk of being diagnosed with other cancers. Genetic testing can also provide an opportunity for our family members to learn about their own cancer risk.
Genetic counseling is recommended for anyone undergoing cancer genetic testing. A genetic counselor can evaluate your individual risk for getting certain types of cancer based on your family’s medical history. Genetic counselors also review the results of any genetic testing with you.

Genetic Counseling
Genetic counseling provides information about how genetic conditions might affect you or your family. A genetic counselor will collect your personal and family history. They can use this information to determine how likely you have a genetic condition and are at risk of being diagnosed with it. Based on this information, the genetic counselor can help you decide whether a genetic test might be right for you or your relative.
If you are recommended for genetic counseling, you may need help paying for the out-of-pocket costs related to this service. Cancer1Source can help you with these costs.
To find a genetic counselor in your area, by language, you can visit the National Society of Genetic Counselor’s website. The Find a Genetic Counselor directory offers access to over 3,300 genetic counselors (US and Canada). You have options for in-person or Telehealth counseling.
The Cancer1Source encourages you to seek the Certified Genetic Counselor within your own Cancer Center.
At this time, some insurance companies may not cover the cost of a Certified Genetic Counselor, however other professionals like Nurse Practitioners may be covered.
